Paddling

Steeped in Hawaiian culture and tradition, outrigger canoe paddling is widely popular here in Hawaii. There are strict requirements for the shape, length, and weight of the canoes. Teamwork is essential in the sport, not to mention it’s a lot of fun!

For racing, the Club paddlers typically wear team jerseys. Jerseys are custom ordered each year. They generally cost around $30 per person. Neoprene paddling shorts are also recommended for your comfort and safety. Shorts may be purchased through local retailers such as Island Paddler and Excel.

Regular Paddles are $150–350. This varies depending on the number and type of paddle you buy. The goal for each paddler should be to own their own paddle.

Suggested basics for practice:

  • PADDLE: Participants should bring their own paddle.
  • DRINK: Please bring a small bottle of water or sports drink.
  • A DRY T-SHIRT: A dry towel and a T-shirt or sweatshirt are recommended for after practice. As a member of WYC, locker room facilities are available for changing.
  • SUNSCREEN: Sunscreen is recommended for daytime participants.
  • NEOPRENE: Neoprene shorts are recommended because they cushion the hard seats of the canoe and minimize chafing.
